Trinity

A woman asking for alms stands within a composition of repeating triangular forms, dark architectural masses, and a luminous cross. The overlapping geometry suggested the Trinity to me, while the visual structure of the scene seemed to direct everything toward the cross.

I made this photograph at the entrance of a church in Mexico. What first held my attention was not only the woman asking for alms, but the repetition of forms surrounding her. Triangular shapes appear throughout the composition, overlapping with the dark column, the figure, and the bright geometry of the cross. That repetition suggested the idea of the Trinity, while the lines and visual weight of the scene seemed to point insistently toward the cross.

Beyond its formal structure, the photograph contains a tension between faith and need, monumentality and vulnerability. I do not intend the image to define the woman through poverty or to explain her circumstances. I am more interested in what happens when formal order and human uncertainty occupy the same frame.
