Calm Before the Chew

A quiet moment of contemplation captured in the wild, where stillness, expression and instinct converge. The photograph reveals a more intimate side of the mountain gorilla, where immense physical presence gives way to an unexpectedly gentle and contemplative moment.

Captured in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, this mountain gorilla was photographed during a quiet moment as it paused with vegetation in its mouth. There was nothing dramatic about the scene. The gorilla was simply eating, completely absorbed in its own world, yet its expression created an unexpected sense of calm and contemplation.

What drew me to the moment was the contrast between the gorilla’s imposing physical presence and the gentleness of its expression. Its relaxed posture and unhurried gesture revealed a quieter side of an animal so often portrayed through its strength and power.

The close perspective brings the viewer into the encounter, allowing the details of the gorilla’s face, fur and expression to become the focus. The simplicity of the moment is intentional. There is no action to distract from the subject, only a fleeting glimpse into an ordinary moment in the life of a wild animal.

Calm Before the Chew is about finding beauty in these understated encounters. Sometimes the most memorable moments in wildlife photography are not moments of action, but those brief periods of stillness when an animal simply exists in its natural world.
