The friendly old shoemaker
The old shoemaker is showing tourists a pair of shoes he made.
Moroccans don't like having their photos taken; sometimes, even if you ask for permission to take their pictures, they won't agree. But this old man who makes shoes is different; he's very friendly and enthusiastic. He showed me the pair of shoes he had just completed. Unfortunately, he spoke in French, so I could only understand bits and pieces, but he roughly explained that his shoe shop had been around for a long time, and he had been making shoes for decades. He mentioned that his shoes were durable and beautiful. When I asked for his name, he just smiled and said, 'You only need to remember that I make shoes on Fes Street.'
Fes is a charming ancient street, thousands of years old in Morocco, renowned worldwide for the craft of leatherwork, a longstanding traditional handcraft. Shoemaking has also gained fame there.
